Since 2002, the university focused on expanding access and excellence to educate and graduate more Sun Devils who are involved citizens prepared to fuel the state’s and nation’s economic needs. ASU has pursued expanding access to all qualified students while increasing the academic quality of its programs. ASU students continue to exemplify the excellence of the new gold standard.
More than 500 National Merit Scholars were enrolled at ASU in fall 2011, a 33 percent increase over fall 2002. Barrett, The Honors College, tops Stanford, MIT and Duke in the number of National Merit Scholars recruited to the university and enrolls more National Hispanic Scholars than any other institution.
With 85 recipients since FY2002, ASU is one of the top schools in the nation in winning National Security Education Program (NSEP/Boren) grants to study abroad in countries of critical interest to U.S. security. Sixty-seven Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholars were enrolled in FY2012 – a total of 171 have attended ASU since the program’s inception.
Sun Devil Athletics
Both student-athletes and coaches not only upheld the long-standing winning tradition of Sun Devil Athletics, but enhanced it over the past 10 years. From the gridiron to the diamond to the hardwood, Sun Devil Athletics experienced unprecedented growth in all varsity sports, highlighted by a school-best fourth-place finish in the Directors’ Cup in 2007-08.

In 2012, the baseball team secured their 50th consecutive season with more than 30 wins; women’s golf was selected to participate in its 21st consecutive NCAA Championship; and women’s tennis made its 25th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2011, the softball team won their second national championship in four years under coach Clint Myers.

arts and sciences
Two students from the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, who participated in the New College Undergraduate Inquiry and Research Experiences (NCUIRE) program and graduated in May 2012, are headed to doctoral programs with assistance from a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Applied computing major Jennifer Ortiz (right photo) and life sciences major Meghan Still (above left) will pursue doctoral degrees with assistance from the fellowship, which provides support including a $30,000 annual stipend.
Ortiz will pursue her doctorate in computer science at the University of Washington, while Still is headed to the ecology, evolution and behavior program at the University of Texas at Austin.

From its inception, Barrett, The Honors College, has attracted the best and brightest students. The year 2009-10 was a stellar one with 156 National Merit Scholars, 118 National Hispanic Scholars, 16 National Achievement Scholars, 827 President’s Scholars and 1,199 Provost Scholars admitted.
