Championing prison education programs

The Prison English Program brings English and literacy to inmates at the Florence State Prison and the Penitentiary of New Mexico through online/hybrid and in-prison instruction. The program also presents students an opportunity to help teach and critique the inmates’ work, as well as take courses on prison education.

“Many people ask why we do this. In reality, 95 percent of inmates will be released and may one day be your neighbor. Education is one thing that can really change a life. Prison-university partnerships contribute post-secondary education that can make a difference.” – Joe Lockard, associate professor of English and program founder
