Research makes ‘Science’s’ top 10 breakthroughs

Arizona State University scientists were lauded by the journal Science, which cited their groundbreaking research on protein structures as one of the top 10 breakthroughs of 2012. Advancements in this research could lead to the development of new drugs to fight diseases such as African sleeping sickness, which kills nearly 30,000 people every year.

“The ASU team is one of the pioneers of the femtosecond nanocrystallography method. Our work includes the design of a sample delivery system, the identification and discovery of nanocrystals, as well as the development of the theory and computer algorithms used to analyze the data." - John Spence, Regents' professor of physics at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
