Virtual models to aid cardiovascular surgeons

Doctoral student Justin Ryan won first place in the Cardiovascular Applications category of the prestigious international Mimics Innovation Awards competition for his project, titled “Virtual Total Artificial Heart Implantation for Improved Device Eligibility Criteria.” Ryan and his biomedical research team have created individualized three-dimensional models to help medical professions do more effective planning for cardiovascular surgeries.

The application would benefit people in need of heart transplants while waiting for donors in cases in which “an artificial heart can bridge the time gap between complete heart failure and transplantation.” – Justin Ryan, ASU doctoral student
