Research into human evolution nets “top 10”

Research from the Institute of Human Origins’ was cited in Scientific American and Smithsonian magazines’ “top 10” stories for 2012. The articles discussed research in early stone tool technologies, documenting a two-step process of projectile weapon evolution that ultimately allowed modern humans to conquer the planet. The research documents the earliest evidence of building projectile weapons, as well as how the technology has advanced to allow projectiles to be thrown greater distances with increased killing power.

“Eleven thousand years of continuity is, in reality, an almost unimaginable time span for people to consistently make tools the same way. This is certainly not a flickering pattern.” -- Curtis Marean, project director and professor in the Institute of Human Origins.
